5 homemade items that can save you money

Cooking at home is generally cheaper than eating out, but sometimes you just want that one particular burger with the bacon and pimento cheese. Delicious. So, if you can’t always trust yourself to cook, what are some other ways you can save at home? Other than the obvious answer, “coffee”, here are 5 homemade items that can save you a bunch of cash…

Laundry detergent: Homemade laundry detergent isn’t really a secret these days, but most of us probably haven’t given it a try. Next time you’re about to drop $18+ on a container of Tide that only promises a max of 96 loads, consider trying to make it yourself. This particular recipe costs roughly the same amount but makes 300-500 loads. That’s better.

Toothpaste: So, it’s great to brush your teeth at least a couple times a day, but toothpaste CAN include ingredients (like Triclosan) that can be harmful. Now I’m not here to discuss the merits of homemade toothpaste. I use Crest and I probably always will. But if you’re thinking about making your own, it’s probably worth mentioning not only the savings, but the possible health benefits as well. Here are a few recipes you can try.

Dog Food: If you’ve got a tiny dog with a small appetite, then you’re probably not having to shop like Cousin Eddie at Walmart. But with a bigger dog, food can get pricy. So why not make your own dog food that is not only half the price, but healthy for your four-legged friends?

Bread: If you enjoy some delicious Boar’s Head deli meats like I do, then you know it takes bread to buy bread. So why not spend less bread on your bread? That was fun for me. Here are a couple recipes for making homemade bread that will save you a wad of cash.
