5 ways to honor veterans

On Veterans Day, we honor the men and women who fought for the freedom of our nation. These soldiers and veterans risked their lives to serve our country, and Veterans Day is a time to show them how much you appreciate them. When you are looking to honor their sacrifice, here are some suggestions to get you started:

Send a care package

Operation Gratitude has been sending care packages to our armed services with the help of local communities since 2003. There is still time this year to share your excess sweets with their 2016 Halloween Candy for Heroes program!

Connect with a veteran

Ask a veteran about their service. Questions as simple as “What did you do in the military?” can start a sincere conversation that may make you appreciate our armed forces and those who serve even more. Listen to as much as they wish to tell and don’t forget to thank them for all they have done.

Attend an event

Veterans Day is a federal holiday and many schools or community organizations often host local events to honor veterans around you. Check your community newsletter or the local news for possible events near you, or check out this list for events happening all over the nation!

Donate

Whether it is time or financial support, donating to the organizations that support our veterans is one of the most effective ways to show how much you care. There are thousands of charities that support our troops, choose the best way to share your thanks.

Never forget

We get so caught up in our own lives, that sometimes we forget about the men and women who have and still are fighting for us. Showing our thanks for their sacrifice should not be limited to one day out of the year. Do your best to honor those who have served all year-round.
