Across California, October 16, 2025, will mark a special occasion as credit unions across California and around the world celebrate International Credit Union Day. This year’s event is inspired by the theme “Cooperation for a Prosperous World,” highlighting the global credit union movement’s commitment to empowering individuals and building stronger communities.
International Credit Union Day has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October since 1948, bringing together credit union members, staff, and local supporters to reflect on the positive impact of financial cooperatives.
Throughout California, many credit unions are demonstrating the spirit of this year's theme by hosting community appreciation events. These festivities will be an opportunity for members of communities and local officials to learn more about the unique benefits of credit union membership, access financial literacy resources, and witness the profound credit union difference.
The ultimate goal: foster deeper relationships between credit unions, local policymakers, leaders, and the communities they serve. It will be a day of celebration, reaffirming credit unions’ commitment to their cooperative principles.
“This year’s International Credit Union Day theme captures the essence of our movement,” said Scott Simpson, President and CEO of California’s Credit Unions. “Credit unions have always understood that financial prosperity is a collective effort, built on trust and collaboration. By credit union members, staff, and communities working together, we aim to continue building a more stable and prosperous world for everyone.”
In partnership with California’s Credit Unions, several local credit unions are hosting celebrations to showcase this impact. These nine locations will have festivities:
- California Credit Union (San Diego, CA).
- Chaffey Federal Credit Union (Rancho Cucamonga, CA).
- Golden 1 (Sacramento, CA).
- Kinecta (El Segundo/Manhattan Beach, CA).
- Mocse Credit Union (Modesto, CA).
- Pacific Service Credit Union (Concord, CA).
- SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union (Tustin, CA).
- Valley First Credit Union (Fresno, CA).
- Wescom Financial (Pasadena, CA).
International Credit Union Day, led by World Council of Credit Unions, offers a chance to honor the pioneers and volunteers who have built the movement. It reinforces the core mission of credit unions to provide affordable loans, encourage savings, and promote financial education.
The credit union movement demonstrates that a better world is possible when people pool their resources and work together. As a global force for positive change, the movement now serves over 411 million members across 104 countries — and more than 14.4 million across California. Regardless of their size, credit unions provide essential financial services to their communities.
“Our mission to serve our members, not to maximize profits, is what makes credit unions the driving force behind a prosperous world,” Simpson said. “The affordable products, financial education, and community outreach credit unions provide are a direct result of our not-for-profit cooperative model. We are people-first institutions, and we want to thank every credit union advocate and member for making this vision a reality.”
