Every year, the NACUSO conference brings together some of the most forward‑thinking leaders in the credit union ecosystem. But the 2026 NACUSO Conference felt different. It felt catalytic. NACUSO has always been about collaboration, but this year elevated that spirit into something more urgent, more innovative, and frankly, more inspiring.
What stood out most was the collective recognition that CUSOs are uniquely positioned to help credit unions tackle their biggest challenges. Not by acting like traditional vendors, but by leaning into what makes the CUSO model special: a credit union‑first mentality, shared ownership, and a commitment to solving problems together rather than selling solutions in isolation.
A panel that hit a nerve: Breaking up with your vendor status quo
I had the privilege of joining a panel focused on a topic that resonated with nearly everyone in the room: breaking up with the vendor status quo.
For too long, credit unions have been conditioned to accept a certain kind of vendor relationship: one defined by rigid contracts, limited flexibility, and a transactional mindset. But the industry is evolving, and those old dynamics simply don’t support the pace of change credit unions need.
Our panel dug into several themes that sparked lively discussion:
- Vendors must become true partners. Not just service providers, but collaborators who understand the mission and member‑centric values of credit unions.
- CUSOs should lead the way. Because CUSOs are built on cooperative DNA, they’re naturally aligned with credit union priorities. They should be setting the standard for partnership, transparency, and shared innovation.
- Long‑term contracts shouldn’t be handcuffs. Even for something as foundational as CORE services, credit unions deserve flexibility. Lock‑ins stifle innovation and limit the ability to pivot when member needs change.
- Transformation requires courage. Breaking up with the status quo isn’t easy, but it’s necessary if we want to build a more agile, collaborative future.
The conversation was honest, energizing, and—judging by the reactions—long overdue.
Why NACUSO 2026 mattered more than ever
What made this year’s conference exceptional wasn’t just the content; it was the mindset. Everywhere you turned, people were talking about shared challenges, shared solutions, and shared responsibility for moving the industry forward.
There was a palpable sense that the industry is entering a new chapter where collaboration isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected.
