WASHINGTON, DC (June 23, 2026) |
On Monday, the Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) provided official comments to Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee Chairman Tim Scott and Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren expressing support for the nomination of John Crews to serve on the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board. In the letter, DCUC also highlighted key policy priorities for the Committee's consideration during the confirmation process.
As part of the recommendations, DCUC Chief Advocacy Officer Jason Stverak reminded that effective regulation depends on transparency, stakeholder engagement, and a willingness to consider diverse viewpoints. While recognizing that policy disagreements may arise, DCUC expressed confidence in Crews' commitment to thoughtful engagement and encouraged the Committee to examine his views on issues that will shape the future of the credit union system.
Among the priorities raised, DCUC called for:
- continued stewardship of the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund within the statutory framework established by Congress;
- responsible modernization of field-of-membership rules to expand consumer access to cooperative financial services; and,
- a regulatory approach that is appropriately tailored to credit unions' size, complexity, and risk profile.
DCUC also encouraged discussion on:
- improving examination consistency and transparency;
- modernizing the CAMELS rating framework;
- preserving federal preemption (where appropriate); strengthening the Central Liquidity Facility (CLF);
- promoting responsible financial innovation;
- enhancing cybersecurity and third-party vendor oversight;
- ensuring military financial readiness remains a key consideration in NCUA policymaking • governance modernization;
- preserving credit union access on military installations; and,
- expanding opportunities for veteran-owned small businesses through responsible lending policies.
“As the Committee considers this nomination, it is important to evaluate how regulatory leadership will engage with stakeholders, maintain transparency, and understand the operational realities faced by credit unions serving military communities around the world,” says Anthony Hernandez, DCUC President/CEO, Ret. U.S. Air Force Colonel. “These institutions are mission partners in supporting financial readiness across the force.”
"The confirmation process provides an important opportunity to examine the regulatory philosophy that will guide the future of the credit union system," adds Stverak. "We are pleased to support John Crews' nomination and encourage the Committee to also explore the policies that will strengthen the safety and soundness of the credit union model and mission.”
