More than 70 kids jumped in to help fill backpacks with school supplies at SAFE Credit Union’s Corporate Office in Folsom as part of the credit union’s Bring Your Kids to Work Day on Tuesday.
SAFE employees and members donated the school supplies and backpacks as part of a donation drive taking place now through Monday, July 27. The filled backpacks will be donated to the Sacramento Children’s Home, which will give them to the children it serves.
“This was such a great and fun way to show kids how SAFE directly supports the community and kids who are like them,” says SAFE Credit Union Community Impact Manager Lauren LeBov. “It made me smile to see them help put the backpacks together and write personal notes to the recipients, sending them positive thoughts and well-wishes for the coming school year.”
The kids helped put together 50 backpacks during the morning event.
“There was a lot of laughing and excitement going on,” LeBov says.
Illianna, 10, the daughter of SAFE Credit Union Senior ATM and ACH Dispute Specialist Michelle DeLaRosa, says she enjoyed filling the backpacks. “It made me happy to know that I was helping a child who needed a backpack,” she says.
Her sister, Isabelle, 16, says she liked putting together backpacks for children, especially “being able to make a card to share some positivity.”
Both sisters also liked a financial literacy workshop put on just for the kids during the Bring Your Kids to Work Day, where they learned about savings, the difference between banks and credit unions, and some information that will be helpful when they get their first jobs, such as the difference between net income and gross income.
The Bring Your Kids to Work event was coordinated by The Village, an employee resource group at SAFE that provides resources and support to parents and caregivers. It follows a previous Bring Your Kids to Work Day event held at SAFE’s branches.
“We were so happy with the turnout,” says Bobby Walsh, a leader of The Village and senior manager, fraud prevention at SAFE. “We lined up a lot of activities for the kids, starting with a big breakfast, a photo booth with fun props, a scavenger hunt/tour of the building, and the backpack stuffing activity. We even got coordinating T-shirts for the kids, parents, and volunteers.”
The Village also supported the Sacramento Children’s Home for its Garden Party earlier this year as a sponsor.
“As a group of parents and caregivers ourselves, we like to support nonprofits who give parents a little extra help,” says Alyssa Welsh, a leader of The Village employee resource group and the assistant branch manager at SAFE’s Hazel branch. “The backpack drive and the garden party were both meaningful ways for SAFE employees to lighten the load a bit for families.”
The backpack drive is part of SAFE’s commitment to support the community through philanthropy, grants, direct giving, scholarships, and volunteerism. The credit union invites employees and members to bring donated school supplies to its 18 branches and Corporate Headquarters building.
