ST. Paul, MN (April 28, 2014) -- Hiway Federal Credit Union (Hiway) is proud to announce that Courtney Van De Velde of Hastings, MN, has won a $500 scholarship from the Minnesota Family Involvement Council (FIC). Courtney was presented with a certificate for her award by Dave Boden, Hiway President/CEO, at Hiway’s Annual Meeting held on April 23, 2014.
This year, the FIC offered $10,000 in college scholarships to Minnesota credit union members. More than 870 students applied for the scholarships from credit unions throughout the state. Applicants were selected based on their school and community involvement, along with their answer to the essay question, “What can credit unions do to attract and engage young adult consumers?” Scholarships were awarded to students in two categories, traditional and non-traditional.
Van De Velde wrote, “To attract and engage young adult consumers, I would target colleges placing a kiosk or small facility and no-fee ATM in a location where students hang out on campus will offer convenience and build visibility.”
“With soaring prices for post-secondary education, making scholarship opportunities available to our members can help reduce the financial strain students may feel,” said Boden. “At Hiway, we are focused on providing financial education to our members and are proud to support them as they work to further their education.”
