San Diego County Credit Union honors San Diego’s best teachers

SDCCU congratulates the 2015 San Diego County Teachers of the Year

SAN DIEGO, CA (October 16, 2014) – San Diego’s finest educators were celebrated at the 24th annual A Salute to Teachers event sponsored by San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution. Held in collaboration with the San Diego County Office of Education and Cox® Communications, the black-tie gala was a presentation of the 41st Annual San Diego County Teacher of the Year Awards. SDCCU has supported this program for the past seven years.

The event took place on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego and was broadcasted live on Cox Communications’ Channel 4. The Academy Awards-style television special highlighted the work and dedication of the county’s 26,000 public school teachers, and culminated with the announcement of the following five 2015 San Diego County Teachers of the Year:

  • Maria Teran-Cruz – Jefferson Elementary School (Carlsbad Unified School District)
  • John Berray – West Hills High School (Grossmont Union High School District)
  • Mary Goins – Lakeside Middle School (Lakeside Union School District)
  • Sara Matthews – Sarah Anthony School (San Diego County Office of Education)
  • Khamphet Pease – Wilson Middle School (San Diego Unified School District)

The five winners will represent the County of San Diego in the California Teacher of the Year program. This year’s 42 nominees were selected by their respective districts based on student achievement, professional development and community involvement, teaching philosophy and personal style, knowledge of educational issues and trends, promotion and development of the teaching profession, accountability and ability to serve as ambassadors of education.

“We are proud to again support this outstanding event and recognize the phenomenal work of all teachers and educators for their tireless devotion to students,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “We applaud these outstanding teachers for the work they do every day to provide our students with the knowledge, skills and opportunities they need to succeed.”

SDCCU also sponsored the Math Educator of the Year award presented at the event. This year’s recipient, Melisa O'Donoghue of Hilltop Middle School in Chula Vista, received a $1,000 cash award.
