HAMPDEN, ME (May 15, 2015) -- Last year, Maine Savings contributed nearly $23,000 to hunger organizations and food pantries serving its communities. Since 1990, Maine’s credit unions have raised and distributed more than $5.3 million to help end hunger in Maine.
According to the Campaign for Ending Hunger, more than 40% of Maine kids under the age of 12 show some evidence of hunger and 15% of Maine households experience food insecurity. Maine Savings’ efforts are part of the Maine Credit Union League’s Campaign for Ending Hunger aiming to assist the nearly 40,000 individuals who are being provided with food assistance each week, as reported by the Good Shepherd Food Bank.
“Food insecurity is a significant issue in our state. As a community-based organization, we are committed to helping to alleviate that problem,” said John Reed, President and CEO of Maine Savings. “I am so proud of our staff for their efforts in raising over $20,000.”
Maine Savings’ donations went to almost 20 different hunger organizations and food pantries in Maine, including the Good Shepherd Food Bank, Family Food Pantry of Carmel, Eastern Area Agency on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program, Safe Place Community Outreach, Ecumenical Food Cupboard, Neighbors Cupboard Inc., Hampden Neighborhood Food, Newburgh Full Gospel Church Food Pantry, UMC Ecumenical Food Cupboard, Vassalboro Food Station Food Pantry, Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen and the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, among others.
