On March 21st, 2019, Dover Federal Credit Union employees participated in Rock Your Socks to help celebrate and bring awareness to World Down Syndrome Day by wearing mismatched socks. The mismatched are symbolic of uniqueness and inclusivity. Dover FCU team members from across the region proudly participated and showed their support. The Rock Your Socks event was developed to help create a unified voice to create discussion and advocate for the inclusion, well-being, and rights of people with Down syndrome worldwide. March 21st was selected as World Down Syndrome Day to help signify the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which ultimately leads to Down syndrome. Dover Federal acquired their socks through the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware, who helped to organize the event within the state.
The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware is a statewide non-profit support group founded in 1979. Organized and managed by parents and families of people with Down syndrome, the DSA acts as a resource for support, advocacy, and acceptance and understanding of individuals with Down syndrome. Their efforts to bring education and awareness aim to allow those with Down syndrome to gain access to the same opportunities as their peers by creating an environment in which diversity is embraced, not merely tolerated, and those with differences are valued and included.
