The Security Service Federal Credit Union Charitable Foundation has provided a $5,000 donation to Loaves and Fishes of the Rio Grande Valley, a full-service shelter that offers help to low-income families in Harlingen and the Upper Cameron County Area in Texas. The donation will be used to provide food for the Bread of Life Dining Hall which serves meals seven days a week at two locations.
“Our goal is to provide individuals with an experience of human dignity,” explains William Reagan, executive director for Loaves and Fishes. “Our dining hall is an integral part of the community and for many people, this is the only opportunity to receive a hot meal during the day. This generous donation will provide thousands of meals for adults and children.”
About 18% of Cameron County residents are food insecure. That means that there is not reliable access to quality, affordable and adequate food supplies in the home for every household member to receive proper nutrition.
“Loaves and Fishes is truly a worthwhile organization in our Rio Grande Valley market,” explains Julie Balboa, vice president of member service—South Texas for Security Service Federal Credit Union. “They are addressing both the causes and consequences of homelessness and poverty to create a better community. They help in multiple ways and we are proud to contribute to this effort.”
Founded in 1991, Loaves and Fishes provides a number of services including a food pantry, family emergency assistance, basic health and wellness needs among other assistance. Hot meals are served daily in the Bread of Life Dining Hall for families and individuals. In 2018, the Dining Hall served 139,927 meals and each year the meal count increases.
The Security Service Charitable Foundation helps further Security Service Federal Credit Union’s corporate goal of community service by contributing to deserving organizations and causes in the credit union's market areas.
