Like most Americans, I watched in shock and disbelief at what transpired in our nation’s capital on Wednesday. The United States has always been a beacon of democratic principles, just like the credit union industry that I am so proud to represent and serve. It doesn’t matter what your political affiliation is, who you voted for in the 2020 elections or where you receive your news and information, it is time to begin the healing process and focus on unity and cooperation.
Tuesday was also a watershed moment as both U.S. Senate seats in Georgia flipped, giving Democrats control of both chambers of Congress and the White House. As we enter the 117th Congress, credit unions need to be united and speaking with one voice as we continue to navigate the economic upheaval COVID-19 has had on our members and financial institutions.
As we enter this new year, 2021, there will be many challenges for credit unions. At LSCU & Affiliates, we continue to focus on fulfilling our mission “To create an environment that enables credit unions to grow and succeed.” Working in partnership with CUNA and other state Leagues, we will be on high alert carefully looking for regulatory and legislative changes that could negatively impact our ability to perfect economic freedom for our members.
Instead of looking backward, let's focus on the many challenges in front of us - How do we help our members and CUs recover from the impacts of COVID-19? How do we best articulate the credit union difference to both new and returning lawmakers? How do we lead by example, both in our states and local communities we serve?
Now more than ever, we need to band together to ensure the promise of America can be achieved by the most vulnerable among us. After all, “People Helping People” is not just our rallying cry, it’s in our DNA. Let’s work together for a brighter future for our nation.
