San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), is proud to celebrate the 2021 Lunar New Year. SDCCU customers who participate in the Lunar New Year celebration can send digital red envelopes (traditionally known as hong bao or lai see) through Bill Payer Plus™ in Internet Branch online banking. Lunar New Year starts February 12, 2021 and this year is the Year of the Ox.
Based on the lunar calendar, the Lunar New Year takes place on a different date each year. Celebrations last for over two weeks and often include firecrackers and lion dances. Traditionally, red envelopes are given to children by their parents or family members wishing them health and good studies in the coming year. The red envelopes always have money enclosed, typically new bills, and are believed to bring good luck. SDCCU will be offering digital red envelopes this year to allow customers to be able to virtually and safely send red envelopes to their families and loved ones. Each year of the 12-year cycle is represented by a Chinese zodiac animal and characteristics are associated with each zodiac birth year. The ox is a symbol of strength and reliability in culture and people born in the Year of the Ox are seen as trustworthy and hardworking.
