11 credit union-backed candidates win races Tuesday

WASHINGTON, DC (June 22, 2022) — Eleven credit union-friendly candidates won primary races in Virginia and primary runoff elections in Alabama and Georgia Tuesday. Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and state leagues have backed 187 credit union proponents this cycle with a 98% success rate.

Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and the League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU) played an important role in the following runoff races:

  • Katie Britt, R-Ala., won against Rep. Mo Brooks in the open Senate primary. Britt recently led the Business Council of Alabama and served as chief of staff to retiring Sen. Richard Shelby.
    • CUNA and LSCU sponsored a six-figure targeted member communication campaign urging 150,000 credit union members to vote for Britt. This was CUNA’s first political expenditure in the 2022 election cycle outside of CULAC donations.
  • Republican Dale Strong beat Casey Wardynski in the runoff for Alabama’s 5th Congressional District race to replace Rep. Mo Brooks.
  • In Georgia, Republicans Rich McCormick in the 6th Congressional District and Mike Collins in the 10th Congressional District prevailed in their respective runoffs against Jake Evans and former state Rep. Vernon Jones.

In Virginia, CULAC and the Virginia Credit Union League backed 7 successful candidates.

CULAC is one of the five largest trade association PACs and among the most bipartisan PACs in the country. CULAC works with state leagues to identify, vet, and back congressional candidates who support credit unions and the CUNA-League system’s efforts to promote financial well-being for all.
