20th Annual Community Spelling Bee announced by Mid-State Literacy Council and sponsor PSECU

The Mid-State Literacy Council will hold its 20th annual Ron & Mary Maxwell Community Spelling Bee at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10 at the Foxdale Village Auditorium in State College, PA. Along with sponsor PSECU, Pennsylvania’s largest credit union, the Literacy Council invites the community to participate in the event or attend for viewing pleasure. Proceeds from the event benefit the Mid-State Literacy Council’s adult literacy programming.

“The Community Spelling Bee directly funds the free and low-cost tutoring programs and classes that we provide to adults learning literacy, English language skills, and math,” said Mid-State Literacy Council Executive Director Amy Wilson. “The Bee is also a fun way for people to connect on a common interest and to support their local community.”

During the Community Spelling Bee, adults in teams of two or three from around the Central Pennsylvania region compete to be named champions based on their spelling ability. In each round, teams are prompted with a word and given one minute to spell it using paper and pencil. After spelling two words incorrectly, a team is disqualified. Rounds continue until only one winning team remains.

PSECU is serving as a Honey-Bee Sponsor of the Community Spelling Bee, providing $1,000 in financial support. This is the fourth consecutive year that the credit union has supported the event.

“PSECU is more than an outstanding credit union. We’re also a dedicated member of the communities we serve across Pennsylvania,” explained PSECU Director of Public Relations Margaret Delmonico. “Education is an important pillar of our outreach because we believe that by supporting learning opportunities, like the Community Spelling Bee, we can help prepare people to function and succeed – both financially and as members of society. It’s a fun time, and it also improves our collective well-being.”

Individuals interested in spelling, sponsoring, or volunteering are encouraged to submit their information at mid-stateliteracycouncil.org/spelling-bee-signup. Spectators and event donors are also welcome.
