29 credit union champions succeed in primaries

WASHINGTON, DC (May 18, 2022) — Twenty-nine credit union champions succeeded in primary elections across five states, Tuesday. They were supported by the Credit Union Legislative Action Council, Credit Union National Association’s (CUNA) political action committee (PAC), and credit union Leagues in Idaho, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Oregon, and Pennsylvania.

So far this year, 73 credit union champions have successfully advanced to the general election this November.

Among closely watched races, CULAC and the Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA) supported incumbent Mike Simpson, R-Idaho-02, in his bid against four challengers. Rep. Simpson has history of supporting credit union efforts to promote financial well-being for all.

In North Carolina, CULAC and the Carolinas Credit Union League (CCUL) supported state senator Chuck Edwards in his successful challenge to unseat incumbent Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C.-11.

Other notable open seat wins for credit union-backed candidates include:

  • Morgan McGarvey, D-Ky.-03, in partnership with the Kentucky Credit Union League.
  • Valerie Foushee, D-N.C.-04, and Jeff Jackson, D-N.C.-14, in partnership with the CCUL.
  • Val Hoyle, D-Ore.-04, in partnership with the NWCUA.

CULAC, one of the five largest trade association PACs nationally, is the credit union system’s principal means of engaging in federal elections. CULAC works with state Leagues to identify, vet, and support candidates for Congress of either party who support credit unions and the CUNA-League system’s efforts to promote financial well-being for all.

CULAC is among the most bipartisan PACs nationally.
