A day to honor, a day to serve
WASHINGTON, DC (January 14, 2021) — On Monday, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day. Not only is it a Federal holiday, it is a National Day of Service, where we are called on to both reflect on King’s legacy and to honor it through service our own.
Credit unions are no strangers to service. It is at the heart of the credit union philosophy, People Helping People. Every day of the year, credit unions not only provide their members with exceptional financial service, they also give back to their communities through scholarships, donations, and more.
This special credit union philosophy is the heart of DCUC’s mission: Serving Those Who Serve Our Country. Our defense credit union members serve our nation’s military and veteran communities. These communities are a microcosm for our country, mirroring the demographics and challenges of ordinary American life, while also facing some challenges that are unique to military service.
In many cases, our member credit unions serve not only their military membership, but also the communities surrounding their installations. These areas are often remote or under-served and our credit unions provide them with opportunities to create secure financial futures.
“DCUC is proud to serve our defense credit unions as they serve not only their military populations, but their entire communities. We know that no matter who walks in our members’ doors, they will be served with respect and receive sound financial service,” shared Anthony Hernandez, President/CEO, DCUC.
“It is important that as we take the time to reflect on King’s legacy, we continue to serve our communities and honor his work by working towards a more equitable future,” said Hernandez. “We want to remind our members, and all credit unions, of the opportunities out there to join programs like CDFI and the CLF. They provide credit unions with resources to continue their good work, especially in communities that are traditionally under-served and under-represented.”
