Altura Credit Union awards $38,000 in college scholarships

RIVERSIDE, CA (June 12, 2014) — Thirty-eight high school seniors graduating from Riverside County public and private schools are receiving $1,000 college scholarships from the Altura Scholarship Foundation, the educational foundation for Riverside-based Altura Credit Union.

Of the 38 scholarships this year, 27 are general scholarships, including five for students in AVID programs. Ten additional scholarships will be awarded in August to students planning to attend the local university, the University of California at Riverside. And one memorial scholarship was also awarded.

“Altura has been awarding college scholarships to local youth since 1993,” said Altura CEO Mark Hawkins.  Proudly, we have given scholarships totaling nearly $390,000 since then, which have enabled 421 students to pursue an advanced education.”

He added, “Although we started the foundation, it is our Members and their generosity that have enabled us to grow this endowment toensure that we can help many more local youth in the future.”

Scholarship recipients are selected based on their academic record, and an essay detailing their college goals, financial need and extracurricular activities. More than 200students applied for Altura Scholarships this year.
