America First Credit Union “Strolls in Support” of cancer awareness

OGDEN, UT (June 8, 2015) — America First Credit Union, in support of West Haven Elementary School, ‘strolled in support’ of cancer awareness at the eighth annual West Haven Elementary Hawk Walk, held Friday, May 15 at West Haven Elementary. This year, the elementary school raised a total of $6,028.51 including America First’s contribution of $2,500. Since its inception in 2007, the Hawk Walk, hosted by West Haven students, has raised more than $47,000 for the American Cancer Society.

More than 500 students, parents and teachers participated in the Hawk Walk and a Survivor’s Walk was held to celebrate cancer survivors in the community during the event. The America First Credit Union Utah Jazz dancers joined in the fun and cheered on walkers. The event was designed to encourage students and individuals to learn the principle of generosity.

The Hawk Walk began in 2007 when then West Haven sixth grader, Garrett Gallegos, and his mother, Tammy, who is a Senior Vice President at America First, walked together in a Relay-for-Life. Gallegos asked if they could start a similar effort at his school to help his teacher who had two sons diagnosed with cancer. Things snowballed from there as other students wanted to lend support and raise funds for the cancer society. That first year, West Haven fifth and sixth graders held the first mini Relay-For-Life Hawk Walk.

With a long-standing history and more than 76 years servicing members, America First has become one of the largest, most stable and most progressive credit unions in the country, and has remained a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative financial institution. Today, America First has 110 branches, and is the 12th largest credit union in assets in the United States with over $6.7 billion, and the seventh largest credit union in membership in America with more than 696,000 members.
