American 1 Credit Union is proud to announce a new partnership with the Michigan Department of Corrections at Parnall Correctional Facility to provide financial wellness education to incarcerated individuals preparing for reentry into society. As part of the Vocational Village program, American 1’s Financial Wellness team is teaching essential financial skills to future parolees, helping them build a foundation for long-term success.
Led by American 1’s Financial Wellness team, the classes cover topics such as budgeting, understanding credit reports, and building strong credit. These lessons are designed to equip participants with the tools they need to navigate the modern financial landscape and make informed decisions upon release.
“The financial landscape has changed significantly since many of these individuals entered the system,” said Collin Martin, Financial Wellness Manager. “Our goal is to empower them with the knowledge and confidence to manage their finances and avoid the struggles that often accompany reentry.”
The Vocational Village is a unique program within Parnall Correctional Facility that provides incarcerated individuals with career training and life skills. The addition of financial education through American 1 Credit Union enhances the program’s holistic
approach to rehabilitation and reflects the credit union’s ongoing commitment to community impact and financial empowerment.
Carolyn Duncan, Chief Member Experience Officer at American 1 Credit Union, emphasized the importance of the initiative: “At American 1, our mission is to create financial wellness across all communities we serve. This partnership represents a meaningful step toward that goal—equipping incarcerated individuals with the financial knowledge and tools they need to successfully transition into life after release.”
American 1 Credit Union offers financial coaching and classes to members and the surrounding communities. In addition, the credit union is proud to provide the Fresh Start program. Whether you have a low credit score or no credit history, this program is an opportunity for you to restart your finances with credit-building options that were created with you in mind.
