Board Has Even Split of Credit Union and Non-Credit Union Expertise

MADISON, WI (May 8, 2014) — Angela K. Owens has been appointed to the CUNA Mutual Group Board of Directors, effective May 1, 2014.

Ms. Owens has delivered impressive financial results and growth at AAFCU under very challenging economic conditions. AAFCU’s net worth has increased from 8.8 percent to 10.9 percent and assets have grown more than $800 million during her five years of leadership.

Also this month, terms are expiring for three members of the Board of Directors.  All three are former Board chairs, who contributed significantly to CUNA Mutual Group. Those leaving the Board this month include, Alan Peppers, President/CEO, Westerra Credit Union, Denver, Colo.; Larry Wilson, retired President/CEO, Coastal Federal Credit Union, Raleigh, N.C.; and Loretta Burd, Retired President/CEO, Centra Credit Union, Columbus, Ind.

With the expiring terms, and the addition of Ms. Owens, the Board will stand at 11 director positions going forward, with 10 of them being outside directors, along with the CEO.

“Our Board of Directors brings strong insight to lead CUNA Mutual Group to long-term success.  The board is an even mix of leaders from the credit union industry and those with business experience from other businesses.  This ensures we remain true to our credit union heritage while also embracing broad viewpoints,” said Robert N. Trunzo, President & CEO, CUNA Mutual Group. “Our policyholders can be assured this board composition means their insurance company is being guided by world class leadership.”

Ms. Owens brings a high level of expertise in finance and accounting to the Board, having also held multiple leadership positions at commercial air carrier American Airlines.

“Angie has been a results-driven leader at every point in her career,” Trunzo said. “She’s a strategic thinker who understands an organization’s balance sheet and will be a valuable addition to the CUNA Mutual Group Board.”
