Andrews Federal awarded 2020 U.S. Air Force Credit Union of the Year and 2020 U.S. Army Distinguished Credit Union Service Award

Andrews Federal is ready to serve the U.S. Armed Forces

SUITLAND, MD (July 8, 2021) — Andrews Federal Credit Union (Andrews Federal) is excited to announce that it has been awarded the 2020 U.S. Department of the Army “Distinguished Credit Union of the Year” designation for its Andrews Federal USAG Benelux location. In addition, Andrews Federal received the 2020 U.S. Department of the Air Force “Air Force Credit Union of the Year” designation for its Andrews Federal Joint Base Andrews location.  Being selected by one branch of service is a fantastic achievement; receiving two distinct service awards from multiple branches of the military is astounding.

“We are humbled by this great honor,” said Jim Hayes, CEO/President, Andrews Federal. “On behalf of our Board of Directors, management, and staff, we are thrilled to be acknowledged by both the U.S. Air Force and Army. This outstanding achievement confirms that we are delivering on our promise to help our members along their financial journey.”

Andrews Federal is deeply committed to improving the financial lives of those who serve in our military.   Initially established in 1948 on Joint Base Andrews (JBA), Andrews Federal is particularly proud to be the year’s U.S. Air Force Credit Union. The Credit Union continues to dedicate time and resources to JBA non-profit organizations such as Andrew’s Attic, the Air National Guard, and the 459th Air Refueling Wing.

“Your team’s outstanding level of service placed you ahead of the competition,” said Stephen Herrera, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. Air Force. Mr. Herrera also added that Andrews’ “no-interest loans and loan payment deferment programs in response to the financial hardships caused by COVID-19 provided a significant lifeline to multiple members. Extremely important, your branch provided essential disbursing agent support for the critical air missions of the flight line. And lastly, your support of the local community through scholarships, event sponsorship, and especially, the Fisher House reaffirms your unique partnership with the Joint Base Andrews mission and its personnel.”

Andrews Federal is equally proud of its support of five Army locations in Europe. Andrews Federal has two locations in Germany that serve USAG Wiesbaden, while it’s remaining three branches in Belgium and the Netherlands serve USAG Benelux. To support the Military community, Andrews Federal sponsored the Morale Welfare and Recreation in Chievres, Brussels, and Brunssum, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), both DODEA and SHAPE schools, JROTC, and the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program. As an example of its commitment to aiding members at all stages of their financial journey, Andrews Federal also provided classroom instruction for middle and high school students in addition to providing practical financial management tips on Armed Forces Network’s biweekly radio program, Money Magic.

Andrews Federal was nominated by COL James Yastrezmsky, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Benelux, because “the determination, imagination, and perseverance of the Andrews Federal staff returned great financial and community-enriching benefits to our people, and modeled an enduring commitment to meet the needs of our community.” COL Yastrezmsky also highlighted that “Andrews Federal Credit Union is the true example of a community partner, and I am proud to have them as a valued and key partner of my team, serving our community here in USAG Benelux.”

Jim Hayes also said, “Unprecedented times also come with unprecedented achievement. The global pandemic presented Andrews Federal the opportunity to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to the financial readiness of its military communities. Initiatives such as automatic loan payment deferral, individualized military service, and support, special hours of operation, increased ATM limits, and more were all provided to aid our communities when it mattered most. We are incredibly proud to see our efforts acknowledged with such prestigious distinctions made by the local command.”

Andrews Federal will be recognized with both the Air Force and Army 2020 Distinguished Credit Union Service Awards during the Defense Credit Union Council’s 58th Annual Conference in Naples, Florida, August 10-13, 2021.
