Building buyer readiness for homeownership: A collaborative effort to empower future homeowners
PETERSBURG, VA (June 5, 2024) — Peoples Advantage Helping Hands, in partnership with Virginia State University and the Urban League of Greater Richmond, is proud to announce the launch of the “Building Buyer Readiness for Homeownership” project. This initiative is designed to offer comprehensive financial coaching and support to residents, with the goal of enhancing their financial health and preparing them for successful homeownership.
The Building Buyer Readiness for Homeownership project will feature a series of monthly summer workshops aimed at those who aspire to purchase a home. Through this initiative, participants will have access to trusted financial coaches who will provide invaluable guidance on improving credit scores, securing better interest rates, and accessing credit. These improvements are essential steps toward making homeownership a reality for many in our community.

“We are committed to offering the community access to expert professionals who can help them understand the intricacies of credit for homeownership,” said Shanika McClelland, Executive Director for Peoples Advantage Helping Hands. “Our goal is to provide one-on-one financial budgeting support and highlight the importance of estate planning when purchasing a home.”
The workshops will cover a range of topics, including:
- Understanding Credit for Homeownership: Participants will learn how to manage and improve their credit scores, a critical factor in securing favorable mortgage rates.
- One-on-One Financial Budgeting Support: Personalized sessions will help individuals create and maintain budgets that align with their homeownership goals.
- Estate Planning: Experts will explain the significance of estate planning in the home buying process, ensuring participants are well-prepared for long-term financial stability.
This collaborative effort leverages the expertise and resources of Peoples Advantage Helping Hands, Virginia State University, and the Urban League of Petersburg to provide a robust support system for prospective homeowners.
