Utqiaġvik, AK (April 20, 2026) |
Ukpeaġvik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC) and Global Credit Union are pleased to announce the upcoming opening of a new Global Credit Union branch in Utqiaġvik, expected in June 2026. The branch will be located inside the AC Stuaqpak store, expanding access to essential financial services for the North Slope community.
UIC and GCU began collaborating in December 2024 to increase banking access and financial services to Utqiaġvik. The new branch is designed to meet the needs of the local community and UIC shareholders.
“We recognized early on the importance of expanding access to financial services in Utqiaġvik, and we’re grateful to partner with UIC to make this a reality,” said Geoff Lundfelt, President and CEO of Global Credit Union. “This branch reflects our commitment to serving communities across Alaska and ensuring our members have the tools and support they need to succeed.”
“This has been a long time in the making, and we are excited to see it becoming a reality,” said Dr. Pearl K. Brower, UIC President and CEO. “Access to financial services is critical to the wellbeing of our people. This effort reflects our commitment to putting shareholders first by bringing companies like Global into our community to provide essential services.”
The branch will employ three individuals, including a branch manager and two financial services representatives. Global Credit Union intends to hire locally whenever possible, and job postings will be released soon. UIC will help share these opportunities through its communication channels to ensure community awareness and engagement.
In addition to traditional banking services, Global Credit Union plans to offer a range of free
programs designed to support financial empowerment in the region, including:
• Financial Literacy Workshops focused on budgeting, credit management, and savings strategies
• Digital Banking Training with hands-on support for mobile tools and online banking
• Small Business Support including guidance on accounts, payroll services, and access to capital
• Retirement and Investment Planning through introductory consultations and workshops
“We are honored to partner with UIC to bring these services to Utqiaġvik,” said Erica Kemp, Vice President of Brand Administration for Global Credit Union’s Alaska Region. “This new branch reflects our commitment to serving communities across Alaska by increasing access to financial tools, education, and resources that help individuals and families build a strong financial future.”
Located within AC Stuaqpak, the branch is designed to meet people where they already are, making financial services more accessible and convenient. Both UIC and GCU see this as an important step in strengthening economic opportunities across the North Slope.
More details, including hiring information and grand opening plans, will be shared in the coming months.
