Consumers Credit Union receives 2014 CUNA HR/TD Award for Strategic Leadership

KALAMAZOO, MI (April 28, 2014) — Consumers Credit Union has received the 2014 CUNA HR/TD Award in Strategic Leadership for Credit Unions with $500 million to $1 billion in assets. Shawn Premer, VP of Human Resources, accepted the award from the Credit Union National Association earlier today at the Annual CUNA HR/TD Council Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The CUNA HR/TD Council’s Award Program recognizes and honors credit unions that exemplify excellence in the human resources and training disciplines and serves to promote credit union philosophies through people leadership. The distinction is reserved exclusively for the credit union HR/TD elite, those who in all aspects of their chosen profession consistently excel for the benefit of their credit union, uphold the standards of HR/TD professional ethics, and contribute to the credit union movement.

The HR/TD Strategic Leadership Award recognizes a senior human resources or talent development professional who has made significant contributions or has taken an innovative approach to talent management, leadership and succession planning, learning development strategy, leadership and organizational development, and internal branding.

Consumers received this award in recognition of the three-pronged approach to leadership succession planning that Premer developed and implemented. This approach includes:

o   Integrity Coaching management training

o   Retail Management Development Program – a ten month indepth training for rising stars in the credit union’s retail offices that culminates in a final project

o   Mentor Program – fosters professional development through relationships between up-and-coming leaders and experienced individuals on the management team

Premer says, “These programs cultivated the talent within the credit union and provided options for staff seeking to maximize their potential. We are most pleased to have created a team that truly desires to advance their careers at Consumers because they recognize the opportunity for personal and career growth within our organization.”

The credit union’s dedication to a company culture centered around professional development and employee wellness has paid off with record employee and member satisfaction rates. The most recent staff survey revealed employee engagement of 4.29 out of 5, and the 2013 member survey reported an overall satisfaction rate of 98.1%. Of members surveyed, a record 85.5% said they were very satisfied with the services Consumers provides.

Says Kit Snyder, President and CEO, “At Consumers Credit Union, our strategic goals center around TEAM, because our focus on team camaraderie and support, staff development, and robust training programs enhances member service. Engaged and committed employees provide top-notch service.”

In recent months, Consumers has received numerous awards for its company culture and human resources initiatives, including being named a National 101 Best and Brightest Company to Work For, Michigan’s Healthiest Employer by Crain’s Business Detroit, and a Best and Brightest in Wellness winner.
