Credit Union of Ohio uncovers benefits of going virtual

Virtual workshop series appeals to today’s prospective homebuyers

HILLARD, OH (June 15, 2020) — In a move to adapt to the social constraints of the global pandemic, Credit Union of Ohio made a decision to take its popular homebuyers workshop series online in May.

“Our free workshops are one of our best ways to connect directly with members and prospective members,” said its VP of Marketing and Strategic Planning Jill Gerschutz. “We knew we needed to meet this challenge head-on and find a way to continue this service for our community.”

After outweighing any potential downside, the credit union’s marketing team got to work to make the switch to a virtual workshop format. The workshops were led by the credit union’s financial coach, Cindy Walker, and promoted through a member email, social media and a news release. Zoom was the platform selected to host the workshops due to its various registration and hosting features.

The number of individuals interested in attending the workshop series was remarkable with 200 registrations and a total of 77 attendees. Attendance was more than a 100 percent increase from its in-person 2019 homebuyers workshop series (which hosted 34 attendees).

Nearly 32 percent of those who registered for the virtual workshops said they planned to purchase a home within the next six months.

Credit Union of Ohio has already had three attendees apply for a loan and it expects at least 10 percent of workshop attendees to submit loan applications later this year.

“This virtual shift has allowed us to uncover a value-added service for today’s prospective homebuyers,” said Gerschutz. “We plan to make virtual workshops a continued part of our community offerings in the future.”
