Credit union pioneer John Jeter remembered

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (July 15, 2015) — The Indiana Credit Union community is saddened by the loss of credit union pioneer John Jeter. Jeter was FORUM Credit Union’s first full-time manager and CEO, dedicating more than 30 years to the Credit Union before being inducted into the Indiana Credit Union Hall of Fame in 2000.

Jeter was a true credit union pioneer and innovator, leading FORUM Credit Union from an operation with 2,000 members and $2 million in assets to a thriving cooperative with more than 70,000 members and $400 million in assets at the time of his retirement. During his tenure, 1965 to 1998, the Credit Union was the first in Indiana to receive permission to pilot the idea of a checking account and one of the first in the country to work with regulators to allow expansion of membership to include small employers with related common bonds. Throughout his career Jeter served on numerous task forces and decision-making bodies within the credit union movement, including the Indiana Credit Union League, Indiana Corporate Federal Credit Union, and the Information Technologies Association. Jeter was also instrumental in the development of the shared branching effort in the state of Indiana.

Jeter positively impacted those around him and built a strong foundation for future success at FORUM Credit Union. He is remembered as a visionary leader who believed in the credit union philosophy of people helping people and facilitated cooperation with other credit unions both within the state of Indiana and across the country.
