CUES Director of the Year, Volunteer Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

MADISON, Wis.—The Credit Union Executives Society has named Martin D. Gillis, CCD, board chairman, Windsor Family Credit Union (WFCU), Windsor, Ontario, Canada, as the 2012 CUES Director of the Year. He will be honored during an awards celebration at CUES’ Directors Conference, December 9-12, in Palm Desert, Calif.

Gillis has over 36 years of experience in the credit union industry. Among his many contributions to WFCU, Gillis led total asset growth from $40 million in 1986, to over $900 million as of May 2012. A longtime proponent for board governance, Gillis was instrumental in ensuring a board education plan and evaluation process was implemented at WFCU. He was also active in the process of restructuring the size of the WFCU board, and the redevelopment of the board nomination process.

Five credit union directors will also be honored as inductees into the CUES Volunteer Hall of Fame during the awards ceremony. They are:

  • Leroy Harvey, board vice chairman, Generations Federal Credit Union, San Antonio
  • Gigi Porcelli, board vice chairperson, Bethex Federal Credit Union, Bronx, N.Y.
  • Linda Slupe, former credit and supervisory committees member, ICON Credit Union, Boise, Idaho
  • Charles Smith, board chairman, First New York Federal Credit Union, Albany, N.Y.
  • John Weidert, board chairman, First Technology Federal Credit Union, Palo Alto, Calif.

The CUES Director of the Year award recognizes a board member for excellence in credit union volunteerism based on their achievements at the credit union; contributions to other credit unions, credit union organizations and the community; and professional development and education. The CUES Volunteer Hall of Fame award ensures outstanding directors are always remembered by recognizing individuals who have shown dedication to self-development, encouragement of full board development, and providing ideas for the advancement of all credit union boards.
