MADISON, Wis. – Scott Sysol, CUNA Mutual Group chief information security officer and vice president of information technology, has been named the 2011 Chief Security Officer of the Year by SC Magazine.

The publication has sponsored the annual SC Awards for more than a decade to recognize security’s key contributors and outstanding products. The awards are designed to honor the professionals, companies and products that help fend off the myriad security threats confronted in today’s corporate world. Individuals, brands and solutions recognized in the program address not only the security challenges prominent today, but also the emerging threat landscape of tomorrow.

The publication recognized Sysol’s efforts in leading CUNA Mutual’s end-to-end data protection project, which involves meeting or getting ahead of compliance mandates, while simultaneously addressing internal security policies and privacy concerns.

“Scott has worked tirelessly to help senior executives better understand the complexities of information security and help them make plans to address the challenges of the future,” said Illena Armstrong, editor-in-chief, SC Magazine. “As a result, corporate executives view Scott as a leader who tempers serious security needs with what is best for the business, given current circumstances. At the end of the day, it’s about protecting sensitive information, and Scott Sysol was named the winner because of his substantial contributions to this effort.”

IT security vendor companies nominate entries for consideration in the SC Magazine Awards program, which are judged by a panel of security professionals who conduct in-depth analysis to narrow the field and select the winners.

“Scott is very deserving of this award, and I couldn’t be happier for him,” said Rick Roy, CUNA Mutual senior vice president and chief information officer. “It’s a testament to his dedication to strong data security for CUNA Mutual, our credit union customers and their members.”

Winners of this year’s SC Magazine Awards were announced Feb. 15, at the SC Awards Gala, held in conjunction with the annual RSA Conference in San Francisco.
