CUNA on regulatory relief watch during presidential address
WASHINGTON, DC (January 30, 2018) — Tonight, President Donald Trump will address the nation in his State of the Union speech and CUNA hopes the president will shed new light on regulatory relief. Regulatory relief continues to be a priority issue of concern for credit unions and key pillar in CUNA’s 2018 advocacy agenda.
“CUNA and credit unions saw several victories in 2017, but more work remains, and at the top of that list is the Senate’s bipartisan, regulatory relief bill. The administration has made good on some of its promises to lighten regulatory burden to spur economic growth, but we’d like to see a more focused approach on community financial institutions and what they can do for consumers,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “We’ve had productive engagement with the administration and federal regulators about ways this can be achieved, and we’ll continue going forward to see the primary pillars of our advocacy agenda addressed.”
Chief Advocacy Officer, Ryan Donovan, is leading the charge for CUNA’s 2018 advocacy agenda which is said to, “revolutionize the operating environment for credit unions” by:
· Reducing regulatory burden so that credit union members have access to more efficient and affordable financial services from credit unions;
· Expanding and protecting credit union powers so consumers and small businesses can more easily access the credit union services they need and demand;
· Enhancing payment security to reduce the impact that merchant data breaches have on credit unions and their members; and
· Preserving the credit union tax status so that credit union members continue to enjoy not-for-profit cooperative financial services.
Trump’s address is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. (ET) Tuesday.
