DCECU to celebrate Earth Day with paper-shredding and electronic-statement sign-up activities

MIDLAND, MI (April 16, 2015) – Dow Chemical Employees’ Credit Union will host an Earth Day paper-shredding event from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, to help members safely dispose of confidential paperwork in an environmentally responsible way.

Additionally, throughout Earth Day week, DCECU will donate $5 to The Little Forks Conservancy for every member who switches from paper statements to eStatements.

Safe, secure and environmentally friendly paper-shredding

Representatives from Shred Experts – a paper-shredding company with security-trained employees and secure equipment – will be stationed in the credit union parking lot at 600 E. Lyon Rd. in Midland to provide a safe and secure means to dispose of sensitive information. Shred Experts is an environmentally conscious company that recycles the end waste and reintroduces the recycled product back into the paper stream.

DCECU members can watch while their documents are shredded on-site. By securely disposing of documents, it is less likely the information can be used for identity theft or fraud.

“DCECU staff members wanted to celebrate Earth Day in a way that benefited both members and the environment,” said DCECU President/CEO Dennis Hanson. “We understand that it’s often hard to dispose of documents, given the sensitivity of personal information. Members can finish up their spring cleaning and join us as we shred and recycle documents in a very safe and secure fashion.”

Each member may bring up to three bags of documents to shred. The event is intended for members rather than commercial enterprises.

Compounding the environmental benefits of eStatements

PayItGreen.org, an environmental initiative dedicated to providing information that helps businesses and consumers make the switch from paper to electronic documents, estimates that by switching to electronic bills, statements and payments, the average American household could ANNUALLY:
· Save 6 pounds of paper
· Save 23 pounds of wood
· Prevent the generation of 29 pounds of greenhouse gas

Hanson said, “Imagine what a difference it would make if DCECU members made the switch to eStatements!”

To compound those benefits, DCECU will donate $5 to The Little Forks Conservancy for every member who switches from paper statements to eStatements during Earth Day week (April 20-24), up to a maximum donation of $1,000.
