WASHINGTON, D.C (July 14, 2025) |
Today, the Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) sent letters to several key congressional committees, urging targeted legislative actions to support credit unions and the financial well-being of military families.
In a letter to the House Armed Services Committee, DCUC called for a clean, focused National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and highlighted critical priorities, including preserving the credit union tax exemption, opposing harmful interest rate caps, supporting veteran entrepreneurs, and protecting on-base financial access.
DCUC also engaged the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, ahead of its hearing on organized retail crime, highlighting the vital role credit unions play in fraud prevention and protections; DCUC also voiced strong support for the bipartisan TRAPS Act, which would empower financial institutions to better detect and stop fraudulent payments.
In our letter to the House Financial Services Committee, we stressed the disproportionate regulatory burdens imposed on small, mission-driven credit unions by the Dodd-Frank Act and urged Congress to adopt a more tailored, modernized regulatory framework. Adding to our relentless advocacy front this morning, DCUC sent a letter to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Administrative State, Regulatory Reform, and Antitrust, outlining needed reforms to bankruptcy law that would protect credit union members—especially servicemembers—and strengthen the cooperative financial model.
“These letters reinforce DCUC’s unwavering commitment to protecting the unique needs of military members and the credit unions that serve them,” said Anthony Hernandez, DCUC President/CEO. “We’re advocating for smart, targeted policy that strengthens financial readiness, safeguards consumer protections, and preserves the credit union mission.”
“Whether it's preserving our tax status, advocating for responsible fraud prevention, or ensuring access to safe and affordable credit, we at DCUC are focused on delivering solutions that strengthen the military financial ecosystem and uphold the trust our members place in us every day,” says Jason Stverak, DCUC Chief Advocacy Officer.
