Educational Systems FCU supports 2015 Spelling Bee Competitions

GREENBELT, MD (April 30, 2015) — Educational Systems FCU recently sponsored the Prince George’s County and Anne Arundel County Spelling Bees. Both events challenged middle school students to spell words correctly until there was one final winner.

The Prince George’s County Spelling Bee was held at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in College Park, Maryland. The winner at the event was Tamya Matthews from Mount Calvary Catholic School. She won by spelling the word waterzooi, which is a word of Dutch origin meaning fish stew. The Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee was held at the Board of Education building in Annapolis, Maryland. The winner at the event was William Rogers from St. Mary’s Elementary School. William took home the trophy by spelling the word remonstrance, which means an expression of protest, complaint or reproof.

In addition to receiving a trophy and earning a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee that will be held between May 24 and 29 at the Gaylord National Resort at the National Harbor in Prince George’s County, the winners took home dictionaries, an online subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica and a number of other prizes, complements of the event sponsors. Educational Systems FCU also awarded each winner with a $100 Visa® gift card.

“Congratulations to both Tamya and William! We wish them the best of luck at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
