Financial Fitness results in healthy bodies too

GEORGETOWN, SC (April 17, 2014) – “Getting Fit with the mind, body and wallet.” During Financial Fitness and Literacy month, GKCU employees put their money where their feet were. During a one-day “Financial Fitness” challenge held on April 2, GKCU employees held a “Walk-A-Lot” with members and friends contributing to walking laps around the office. In addition healthier snacks and bottled water were given out in the lobbies, “cooling towels” were giveaways and drawings were held for family-fun activities like Pelicans baseball, Wild Water Waterpark, Brookgreen Gardens and Lands End Restaurant.  Scott Brown, YMCA of Georgetown Executive Director, was also in the lobby at the Georgetown office showcasing memberships, swim lessons and summer day camp programs.

“Each employee challenged themselves to raise money for the YMCA Partnership with Youth campaign while getting some fresh air and exercise,” states Nikki Ewing, GKCU Marketing Director. “The goal was to show that GKCU wants our members to not only tone up with their savings and trim excess dollars from their loans, but to be fit with their minds and bodies too. Overall, I think the staff and the members enjoyed seeing us take the steps to being the best we can be.”

Altogether $500 was raised from the Walk-A-Lot. The credit union matched the funds and contributed $1000 to the Partnership with Youth program, which provide financial assistance to families for many of the YMCA programs.

“We are very grateful to have the support of GKCU”, states Amy Mitchell, Membership and Marketing Director for Georgetown County YMCA. “The funds they raised for the YMCA’s Partnership with Youth Campaign will be designated to children and families in Georgetown County who need financial assistance with programming fees for the Y’s swimming lessons, after school care, summer camp sessions and other programs.  Together we are making a healthy difference.”  Donations to this campaign are accepted throughout the year at the Georgetown County Family YMCA.
