Genisys will assist Local Letter Carriers to Stamp out Hunger

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI (May 1, 2014) — Genisys Credit Union, which provides services to anyone who lives or works in the Lower Peninsula, is teaming up with the Oakland County Sheriff Department and Rite-Aid to assist the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC)  branch 320 with the National Stamp Out Hunger food drive on May 10, 2014.

There is a great need for food donations both locally and nationally. Currently, 49 million Americans are unsure where their next meal is coming from. In Oakland County, 1 in 4 children live in homes that are food challenged.

Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer, low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.

“Stamp Out Hunger provides a great opportunity for everyone to make a big difference in our own community,” said Jackie Buchanan, President/CEO. “We are proud to support the local NALC branch with their dedication to helping local food pantries.”

Participation in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is simple. Letter carriers in Auburn Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Clarkston, Lake Orion, Oxford, Pontiac, Rochester, Waterford, White Lake, and West Bloomfield will place donation bags in residents’ mailboxes the week of May 5th. The community can then leave a non-perishable food donation in the provided bag by their mailbox Saturday, May 10th and NALC Branch 320 will do the rest.

“I invite you to join in America’s great day of giving and help us in our fight to end hunger,” said Kevin Pyszora, NALC Project Coordinator.

Last year, branch 320 was able to raise over 200,000 pounds of food through the Stamp Out Hunger campaign. All items collected by NALC branch 320 will be donated directly to local food banks and pantries to help neighbors and friends in need.
