George Gervin Youth Center and Generations Federal Credit Union Host Third Annual College Extravaganza
Event helps local high school students overcome financial hurdles in pursuit of their education
(San Antonio, TX) October 09, 2012 – The George Gervin Youth Center and Generations Federal Credit Union will host the Third Annual College Extravaganza from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, October 20 at Our Lady of the Lake University. The annual event assists local high school juniors and seniors break down the barriers – typically financial – that often deter them from pursuing their education after graduation.
Students who attend the 2012 Extravaganza will have the opportunity to qualify for more than $10 million in scholarships and financial assistance. More than 20 local college, universities and trade schools will be on hand at the Extravaganza to answer student questions, provide guidance and assist students with obtaining financial aid. Students who attend the event can be nominated by their high school counselors to receive financial assistance if they continue with their education after graduation. Additionally, students who bring all necessary application documentation such as transcripts and identification to the Extravaganza can be eligible to receive scholarships from the schools in attendance.
San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will kick-off the Extravaganza, speaking with the students and sharing with them the value and importance of continuing their education. Students will then attend six sessions throughout the day, including financial education classes provided by Generations Federal Credit Union’s award-winning ‘No Suckers Here’ Youth Financial Education program.
“Many students in our community face quite a few challenges after high school. Those hurdles are oftentimes financial, and that just shouldn’t be the case. Every student should be able to pursue an education regardless of their financial status,” said Barbara D. Hawkins, president and CEO of the George Gervin Youth Center. “The Extravaganza is designed to remove a lot of the barriers these students face, but at the same time it also gets information from various schools directly in front of them; to show them that despite what misinformation is out there, getting an education is absolutely possible.”
The Extravaganza will be emceed by Sonny Melendrez, and will feature a day filled with music, lunch, entertainment, goodie bags, scholarships and financial assistance. Attendance is limited to the first 1,500 students who register for the event through their high school guidance counselor or at http://www.mygenfcu.org/ceregister.
