Golden 1 Credit Union to surpass $1 million in scholarships paid

SACRAMENTO, CA (December 15, 2014) — When it awards 33 new scholarships valued at $386,000 in 2015, Golden 1 Credit Union will surpass $1.14 million in total scholarship funding since its program began in 2013. Applications for the Golden 1 Credit Union Scholarships that will be awarded in 2015 are now being accepted through January 15.

“Applying for our scholarships is easy. The application and everything students and parents need to know are available on our website at golden1.com/scholarships,” said Donna Bland, President and CEO of Golden 1. “These scholarships are different from most because they are renewable for two-to-four years.  They support California’s future leaders and help families and students achieve their dreams of a brighter future.”

Golden 1 Credit Union Scholarships provide Credit Union members and their dependents two- and four-year financial assistance valued at up to $20,000 per student for full-time students who plan to attend accredited, nonprofit colleges and universities in California during the 2015-2016 school year.

2013 Golden 1 Scholarship winner, Teryn Caruso of El Dorado Hills, California had this to say about her scholarship. “Thank you Golden 1 for helping make my semester abroad in South Africa possible! I am enrolled in an abroad program at Azusa Pacific University. For the first ten weeks of the semester, we were living in Pietermaritzburg for school and community service work. The last three weeks have been spent in Cape Town to travel and learn about the history and culture of South Africa.  It’s been really amazing, especially because South Africa is known as the ‘rainbow nation’ due to its extreme diversity. I feel like I have learned so much about the cultures different than my own.”

“Scholarships are just one part of our annual $1 million giving program,” added Bland. “In addition to these scholarships, Golden 1 also provides annual grants exceeding $500,000 to support programs for literacy skills development and foster care for emancipated youth in the communities we serve. Through these programs we demonstrate our commitment to enhancing the financial well-being of our members and diverse communities.”

With more than $8 billion in assets, Golden 1 is the sixth largest credit union in the United States. It has more than 700,000 members, 80 branches, and 270 ATMs. For eligibility requirements and more information, about Golden 1 Credit Union Scholarships, visit golden1.com.
