HFS Federal Credit Union administrative building completed

Hilo, HI (February 25, 2026) |

HFS Federal Credit Union today announced  the completion of its new Administrative Building, located adjacent to the  existing Hilo branch on Kino’ole Street. This milestone marks a significant  investment in the organization’s continued growth and long-term  commitment to serving the Hawai’i Island community.

Founded in 1937 as the Hawaii Federal-Territorial Employees Federal Credit  Union, HFS began in downtown Hilo on Keawe Street before opening its  first member-owned building in 1982 at the current Kino‘ole Street location.  That facility was later renovated in 1990 to support increasing membership  and expanding services. Over the years, HFS has celebrated major  achievements—including name changes, additional branch openings, new  products and services, leadership transitions, and most recently a refreshed  brand identity.

Today, 89 years after its founding, HFS Federal Credit Union is the largest  credit union on Hawai‘i Island, serving more than 55,000 members and  managing over $1 billion in assets. The new administrative building represents an important chapter in the organization’s evolution - from  humble beginnings to its role today as a leading financial institution on  Hawai’i Island.

Relocating administrative operations to the new facility will enable the  Credit Union to begin renovating the original branch. These improvements  will enhance member-facing services, expand service areas, and create  additional space for staff dedicated solely to supporting members’ financial needs.

“The completion of our new administrative building is a major  milestone in our credit union’s history. It provides us with the  infrastructure needed to innovate and expand our financial services for  our membership now and into the future.” – Nathan Abe,  President/CEO

Members will continue to visit the existing branch at 632 Kino’ole Street for  all their financial needs – served by the same trusted team they’ve come to  know, now with additional space to grow in the years to come.
