InFirst Federal Credit Union commits to developing the next generation of credit union leaders

ALEXANDRIA, VA (June 18, 2025) |

InFirst Federal Credit Union (InFirst) has been welcoming talented interns from local colleges for a decade; however, this year is markedly different from past years.

This spring, InFirst recruited seven young adults from colleges throughout Virginia, including George Mason University, Longwood University, Roanoke College, and the University of Mary Washington, to join the credit union’s first-ever Internship Project Team, which will help the credit union diversify its membership portfolio, improve social media engagement, and create a more efficient method of communicating with members and potential members by employing techniques that approach communication from a lens of varying perspectives. In addition, the team will showcase their skills by developing creative content for cross-channel deployment.

“Credit unions as a whole have always struggled to bring in the next generation of members. That’s what pushed this strategic initiative,” says Tameka Murphy, Chief People Officer.

Throughout the project’s lifecycle, the team will meet every week to discuss strategies and opportunities. Furthermore, leaders from each department will set aside time to discuss the critical functions of a professional financial institution and impart their unique experiences and knowledge. The intern team has the opportunity to ask questions about tasks, strategies, and approaches that each department undertakes while performing its duties.

Perhaps most valuable is the direct mentorship and career guidance provided by the senior leadership team, who share industry insights and help navigate opportunities related to the project and, more broadly, a successful career.

At the conclusion of this initiative, these young professionals will be better equipped to enter into the professional world with a unique experience and first-hand knowledge of a critical industry.

The Internship Project Team is managed by InFirst Executive Administrative Assistant Cathy Johnson, with additional support from Chief People Officer Tameka Murphy and President and CEO Mark Hudzik.
