Ito takes reins as NASCUS President and CEO

ARLINGTON, VA (November 4, 2014)  Lucy Ito, the former executive vice president and chief operations officer of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues (CCUL/NCUL) joined NASCUS Monday as the organization’s president and CEO.

“I am looking forward to leading a great staff and to working with the NASCUS Board and Advisory Council to advance the interests of consumers—safely and soundly—through a robust dual charter credit union system,” Ito said. “NASCUS is, without a doubt, THE VOICE of the state credit union system and I want to ensure that it will continue to be in the years to come.”

Ito replaces incumbent Mary Martha Fortney, who is retiring from the association after 22 years of service, the last 11 of which she has served as president and CEO.

“I am so proud to have worked with such enthusiastic, dedicated and dynamic leadership, members and management,” Fortney said. “Leaving NASCUS is bittersweet, but I am excited about what the future holds. I wish Lucy all the best in her future with NASCUS.”

NASCUS Board Chairman Stephen S. Pleger said, “We believe that the future of NASCUS under Lucy’s leadership is bright, and look forward to what she will bring to the association.”

At the same time, Pleger wished Fortney the best in her retirement. “Mary Martha has been a great friend and resource to both NASCUS credit union and regulator members, and the NASCUS Board and Advisory Council deeply appreciate her enthusiastic service to the association,” he said.

Linda Childs, NASCUS Advisory Council chairman, said, “We owe a debt of gratitude to Mary Martha over her many years of service to NASCUS. She will be missed.”

Childs welcomed Ito to the position of president and CEO. “Lucy has a wealth of knowledge about the credit union industry and we believe she will serve NASCUS well,” she said.

Ito served with the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues for the past 10 years. Prior to joining the Leagues in May 2004, Ito served as WOCCU’s senior vice president, where she worked on technical programs and legislative and regulatory issues primarily in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Asia and the Pacific.

Ito earned a B.A. in economics and Asian studies from the University of California-Berkeley and an M.A. in linguistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her post-graduate work includes research as a Regents’ Fellow at the University of California-Santa Cruz and she is a graduate of the CUES Advanced Leadership Institute at Harvard Business School.
