Kinecta Federal Credit Union to empower African-American male students at the Defying the Odds Black History educational experience

Manhattan Beach Police Chief Derrick Abell to address students in keynote speech

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA (February 24, 2020)WHAT:   Manhattan Beach Police Chief Derrick Abell will provide a keynote address to approximately 60 African-American male students from Centinela Valley Union High School District, Mira Costa High School and Compton Unified School District at the Kinecta Federal Credit Union Defying The Odds Black History event. Participants will have access to a panel discussion composed of African-American professionals who will share stories about overcoming adversity to achieve professional success.

Topics will include job etiquette, how to deal with law enforcement, financial preparation for college, goal setting and resiliency. The students will also participate in discussion tables to have an open dialogue with the professionals and share their own stories and goals.

WHY:   The 2nd annual event will address the unique challenges that African-American boys face while transitioning from high school to college or into full-time employment.  As part of its commitment to the advancement and strengthening of the communities it serves, Kinecta Federal Credit Union will host the Defying the Odds Black History event to shed light on the history of the struggles and successes of African-Americans while helping to equip young men with the necessary tools and contacts to define their own path of success.
