Lake Michigan Credit Union reaches 300,000 member milestone

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (October 31, 2014) — Lake Michigan Credit Union (LMCU) is pleased to announce that its membership level has topped the 300,000 mark. The 300,000th member was identified as Jared Smith of Muskegon, MI, who opened a new LMCU account at its Norton Shores/Fruitport Township branch location on Thursday, October 30.

“We’ve known this moment was coming for some time now,” said LMCU President and CEO, Sandra Jelinski. “It was just a matter of when. This is an extraordinary milestone that speaks to the broad support we enjoy in our local communities as well as the hard work of our staff. We wanted to do something special to mark the occasion. We’re very pleased to welcome Jared to the LMCU family – and to all who follow.”

Smith also received an appreciation package that included a $300 Visa gift card and a selection of LMCU merchandise and locally-produced goods.

When asked about what initially attracted him to LMCU, Smith enthusiastically responded, “Emily Rose (mortgage loan originator). She’s amazing. Emily helped us with financing for our first home. When we needed a mortgage for our second home I sought out Emily, who had since come to LMCU. She’s very professional, does an excellent job, and is always looking out for our best interests.”

Lauren Visser, branch manager of LMCU’s Norton Shores/Fruitport Township office said, “It’s so exciting to celebrate LMCU’s 300,000th member at our branch. It’s been wonderful to witness the growth LMCU has achieved over the years, and especially delightful to celebrate it in our local community.”

After opening its original branch office in the home of founder Lloyd F. Hutt in 1933, LMCU has grown steadily in both membership and assets, which exceeded $3 billion in 2014. Starting out as the Grand Rapids Teachers Credit Union, a simple savings and lending institution, LMCU has since grown to include mortgage, insurance, investment and personal/business lending products to its financial repertoire. Technological innovations include electronic and web-based applications, advanced analytics and financial management capabilities.

Lake Michigan Credit Union is one of the largest financial institutions headquartered in Michigan. With a staff of nearly 900, LMCU’s assets exceed $3.3 billion, with a mortgage serviced portfolio of over $4.2 billion. With over 300,000 customers, LMCU has 37 convenient branch locations – including Traverse City, Fruitport Township, Farmington Hills and Troy – and 100 ATMs in west Michigan, Kalamazoo and St. Joseph – plus dedicated mortgage offices in Saginaw, Livonia and Grand Blanc. LMCU provides a full-range of financial services, from high interest-bearing checking accounts to mortgages, commercial loans, insurance and investment services.
