Longtime educator nearing retirement receives free groceries for a year from Suncoast Credit Union

TAMPA, FL (March 25, 2026) |

At a time when grocery prices remain high, Suncoast Credit Union is happy to announce the winner of its Grocery Giveaway, which offered members the opportunity to win a year of free groceries for switching their direct deposit over to Suncoast, and also allowed members with an existing direct deposit at Suncoast to enter.

Calvin McElroy of Auburndale received a $14,400 check for groceries during a ceremony on March 19.

“At Suncoast Credit Union, we pride ourselves on helping our members and the communities we serve,” said Kevin Johnson, President and CEO of Suncoast Credit Union.  “This is a huge example of that.  I congratulate our winner and send my thanks to our team for making this possible.”

McElroy has a remarkable story of public service that spans decades.  He joined Suncoast Credit Union in 1989, at a time when the institution focused on local educators.  It was around the same time he began teaching music to students at several Hillsborough County elementary schools.  About 12 years later, he moved to the district’s administrative offices, where he works to this day.

After almost 38 years of serving students and families in Hillsborough County, McElroy plans to retire later this summer.

“The school district has been good to me,” McElroy said.  “It’s been very gratifying.”
