Maine Savings nominated for Department of Defense Freedom Award

HAMPDEN, ME (May 8, 2015) — Maine Savings is among 18 employers from Maine to be nominated through Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DoD) office, for the 2015 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award (“Freedom Award”). The credit union was nominated by Kaleb Roberts, a Platoon leader with the 185th Engineering Support Company out of Caribou, Maine, and a teller at the credit union’s Broadway branch in Bangor.

Roberts, originally of Brewer, Maine, who now resides in Hampden, earned a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine and health science from Norwich University in Vermont. He not only attended classes at the university, but also participated in the Corps of Cadets, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and played Division 1 Rugby. While at Maine Savings, he enlisted in the Maine Army National Guard and attained a Full Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant after completing both basic training and the rigorous Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. Roberts, who started training in February, is currently in the Engineer Basic Officer Leaders Course for an overview of Army Engineering and to further develop himself as a leader. He will be graduating on June 23 from Fort Leonard Wood Missouri.

“We’re honored to have been nominated for this very special award,” said John Reed, President and CEO of Maine Savings. “Maine Savings fully supports our service members, and takes pride in having team members, like Kaleb, who dedicate themselves to protecting our freedom.”

Since 1996, 205 businesses have been presented with the Freedom Award, the highest recognition given to employers by the Department of Defense for their support of National Guard and Reserve members. Nominees this year consist of large and small organizations from a variety of industries in all 50 states. A complete list available here: http://www.freedomaward.mil/.

Freedom Award recipients will be announced in late June, and honored in an official ceremony at the Pentagon in August.
