Mazuma Receives CUNA Awards from Missouri Credit Union Association

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Fri., Oct. 12, 2012) – Mazuma Credit Union has been recognized with a first place Desjardin Financial Education Award – Youth category and two other awards in the Missouri state-level Credit Union National Association (CUNA) competition for featured activities in social responsibility, philosophy in action, and financial education.  First place winners in each of four categories advance to the national competition.  CUNA will recognize national winners at the 2013 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C.  Judging of the Missouri entries took place in August.  Winning credit unions were announced at the Missouri Credit Union Association (MCUA) 2012 Convention and Exposition awards breakfast on October 5, in Branson, Missouri.

The Desjardins Financial Education Award won by Mazuma in the Youth category (for credit unions in the $150 million to $500 million asset size category) recognizes model credit union efforts to teach personal finance concepts and skills to members and nonmembers, under the age of 18, from May 2011 to May 2012.  A second place award was also presented to Mazuma for their Louise Herring Award entry ($250 million to $1 billion asset size category), along with an honorable mention received for Mazuma’s Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award entry ($200 million to $500 million asset size category).

“Mazuma enjoys a proud history of success with the Missouri Credit Union Recognition Awards, due to the constant internal efforts and external involvement our Mazuma Team Members devote to serving others,” said Mazuma CEO Brandon Michaels.  “Through the MCUA, this competition gets tougher each year, which simply demonstrates how growing credit union excellence across Missouri continues to improve the lives of so many people.  The whole state should be proud of their credit unions’ extra efforts.”

The Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action recognizes model credit union efforts to materially improve members’ lives through programs (other than personal finance education).  The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award recognizes model credit union efforts to strengthen local institutions and materially improve the lives of nonmembers through community outreach programs (other than personal finance education).
