MSUFCU receives Top Workplace award

LANSING, MI (November 17, 2014) — Detroit Free Press readers were recently let in on a little secret that Michigan State University Federal Credit Union employees have always known: The East Lansing-based credit union is a fantastic place to work. The Detroit Free Press named MSUFCU the Top Workplace in the large business category at a ceremony on Nov. 12 where Ford President and CEO Mark Fields gave the keynote address. Some of the companies MSUFCU beat out for the number one spot included: Edward Jones, Quicken Loans/Quizzle, Gentex, Dominos Pizza and Fifth Third Bank.

April Clobes, MSUFCU executive vice president and COO, said happy employees lead to happy members.

“The whole goal for us is to have employees who enjoy their jobs,” Clobes said. “It’s something we work on each and every day.”

Some of the reasons MSUFCU was named a Top Workplace were generous benefits, an upbeat atmosphere and a relationship-building environment, according to the Detroit Free Press.

David Adams, CEO of the Michigan Credit Union League, said MSUFCU is a shining example of the credit union service philosophy embodied in the workplace.

“MSUFCU has set the bar high for all companies, not just credit unions. How we treat our employees is directly related to how they serve members and customers,” Adams said. “Pat McPharlin and April Clobes have worked for years to make the credit union an award-winning credit union, both in service and staff culture. This latest recognition reflects well on all credit unions. Our industry provides great jobs and careers for hundreds of thousands of dedicated employees.”

MSUFCU, which currently employs about 600 people, expects to have more than 1,000 workers by 2024, and just announced plans to build a new facility next to its current headquarters building. MSUFCU boasts 191,000 members and projects to have nearly 250,000 members by 2018.

In addition to MSUFCU, six other credit unions received recognition on the list of top mid-size employers. They are Community Choice Credit Union in Livonia, DFCU Financial in Dearborn, Genisys Credit Union in Auburn Hills, Michigan First Credit Union in Lathrup Village, CP Federal Credit Union in Jackson and Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union in Clinton Township.
