NC 529 scholarship winners announced on College Savings Day

RALEIGH, NC (May 29, 2014) — May 29th is College Savings Day and the perfect date for awarding $529 scholarships for the NC 529 Scholarship Contest!  Along with College Foundation, Inc. (CFI) and the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority, State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) served as a sponsor for the Contest, which ran from January 6-April 30, 2014.  The Credit Union provided the scholarship funding, a total of $529,000, translating into one scholarship award per North Carolina county.  SECU, CFI and College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) representatives were on hand representing all Contest sponsors for certificate presentations in several areas of the state today, including Greenville, Raleigh and Boone.

The winners, who were entered into the contest by having an existing NC 529 account or opening one during the Contest, received the scholarship in the form of a $529 deposit to their NC 529 account. Winners for each county were chosen in a random drawing of all entrants.

Wake County winner Kim Moss, along with her husband and daughter arrived at SECU’s Raleigh-Poole Road branch early Thursday afternoon for the certificate presentation.  She stated, “I am so thankful for receiving this scholarship which will be used to further my daughter’s education.  Thanks to CFNC for the college resources they offer and to State Employees’ Credit Union for providing the scholarship funding.  These funds are greatly appreciated as the cost of tuition continues to increase.”

SECU Advisory Board member Ty Byrd assisted with the presentation and remarked, “Congratulations to Kim and her family on their scholarship win, and for taking the important steps to save for college.  I am proud to represent SECU’s 1.9 million members in providing funding for the Contest scholarships and appreciate CFNC for their work in assisting students with furthering their studies.  College costs can be quite overwhelming and the strategy of saving early can help alleviate a great deal of the financial burden that is often associated with educational expenses.”

A comprehensive list of recipients will be available at www.CFNC.org/NC529 and on the NC 529 Plan Facebook page when all Contest requirements have been completed by the winners.
