Nearly 19,000 SECU youth “Catch the Wave to Save!”
RALEIGH, NC (May 9, 2014) — During the week of April 21st-25th, State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) held its annual Youth Saving Challenge to encourage young members to save for the future. With a “Catch the Wave to Save” theme, the campaign gave SECU’s FAT CAT and teen Zard members an opportunity to make a deposit any time during the Challenge week and be included in a drawing for a chance to win an iPad or iPad mini. Nearly 19,000 youth caught the wave, saving $3.3 million and opening 743 new accounts!
The successful Youth Saving Challenge was held in conjunction with North Carolina’s Financial Literacy for Youth Month. SECU employees statewide created imaginative displays to engage young members and took the opportunity to mix in financial education with campaign-themed puzzles and games. Some branches expanded their teaching efforts with financial education presentations and SECU FAT CAT youth mascot appearances at local schools.
“The Youth Saving Challenge helps make saving exciting for our young members,” said Paul Barbour, Vice President of SECU’s McGee’s Crossroads branch. “After some tough winter weather, it was great to break out the beach balls and surfboards and have a little ‘fun in the sun’ while spreading the word about the benefits of saving early. The youth in our community enjoyed taking part in the Challenge!”
SECU will publish the iPad and iPad mini winners on SECU youth websites, www.cufatcats.org and www.teenzard.org, as well as in the FAT CAT Paw Prints and Zard Money Matterz newsletters upon official member confirmation.
