New Bright Futures Fair aims to prepare Copper Country students for financial and academic success

Houghton, MI (March 9, 2026) |

A collaboration between Michigan Tech’s GEAR UP and TRIO Pre-College Programs, and Breakwater Federal Credit Union aims to bring financial literacy and academic resources to Copper Country families during the first-ever Bright Futures Fair. The fair is scheduled to take place from 6-8PM on April 8, 2026, at the Hancock Community Hub. The event is free to attend and open to all Copper Country ISD high school students and their families.

Families will have the opportunity to participate in Breakwater’s Entrepreneurship Simulation, attend drop-in tutoring sessions with Tech Tutors, and learn practical organization and study strategies at the TRIO Study Skills Table. Parents will have access to valuable financial resources provided by Breakwater Federal Credit Union, and younger siblings can participate in fun, age-appropriate money activities.

Copper Country ISD high school students who complete Breakwater’s Entrepreneurship Simulation will be eligible to win prizes, including the chance to earn a full-ride scholarship to a course of their choosing through Michigan Tech’s Summer Youth Programs this summer.

“We want students to walk in with questions and leave with ideas for what’s possible,” said Gini Gesler, manager of the College Access Programs at Michigan Technological University’s Center for Educational Outreach.

The Bright Futures Fair provides an opportunity for students and families to learn about academic support, career pathways and educational opportunities while connecting with Michigan Tech outreach programs dedicated to helping students prepare for college and community partners that support youth financial literacy.

Students who wish to attend our encouraged to sign up in advance to help facilitators better prepare for the evening. Light refreshments will be provided.
