New Horizons Credit Union awards Hi-Q Championship trophy and prize money to Baker High School

MOBILE, AL (March 13, 2023) — New Horizons Credit Union, title sponsor, of the Mobile County Public School System’s Hi-Q scholastic quiz bowl tournaments awarded the Hi-Q Championship Trophy and $2,000 prize check to Baker High School after the season’s final tournament on March 9, 2023.

The Mobile, AL Hi-Q competition gathered 18 high schools to compete academically.  These high schools represented public, private, and charter high schools in Mobile County.  The final tournament had the top three schools: Baker, Bryant, and Satsuma High Schools compete for prize money and the New Horizons CU’s traveling trophy.

The Hi-Q competition is the oldest continuing academic competition in the U.S. Hi-Q originated in Pennsylvania in 1948.  It expanded across the country over the years and then into Alabama in 1987. The local winner moves on to compete nationally.  Bob Grip, FOX10TV, serves as the region’s Quiz Master asking tough questions from 13 subjects.  The New Horizons’ Hi-Q competition begins every January and runs through March.  The top 3 teams that make it to the finals each year are awarded cash prizes in the amount of $1000 for 3rd place, $1500 for 2nd place, and $2000 for 1st place.

New Horizons Credit Union supports Hi-Q with both sponsorship and volunteer hours.  New Horizons has been providing support for over 30 years. NHCU board member, Joe Mills, attends each match as the score and timekeeper; and the NHCU Marketing Department attends matches to promote an annual scholarship opportunity and classroom financial literacy presentations.

The Hi-Q tournaments are the perfect venue for New Horizons Credit Union to showcase its annual High School Scholarship Program which awards 5, $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school seniors.  Winners will be selected in April with award recipients announced in May.

“Our community needs these kinds of scholastic events to help students learn how to study, learn teamwork, and be better prepared in life.  We are proud to support Hi-Q,” comments Edith Franklin, President/CEO of New Horizons Credit Union.

After a very close match, Baker High School won the final tournament. Consequently, Baker High School will hold the traveling Hi-Q trophy.  If Baker High School wins two more times, they will be able to permanently keep the trophy. Baker High School was awarded the $2,000 prize to use for academic purposes, and the Baker Hi-Q Team will advance to the Hi-Q National Finals and compete against other state Hi-Q teams.
